Brake pads work in conjunction with the other parts of your car's braking system to ensure that your car stops when you need brake. Worn brake pads are a safety issue and need to be inspected regularly along with the rest of your car's brake system. Don't take any chances. What happens when I push on the brake pedal?

The brake pedal is connected to a brake booster which amplifies the force you are applying to the pedal. This pressure is applied to the brake master cylinder which in turn applies brake fluid under pressure via the brake pipes and flexible hoses to the brake calipers / cylinders.The calipers force their pistons on to the brake pads which are brought into contact with the brake discs / rotors. The resistance created by the pressure of the brake pads on the brake discs/rotors stops the car.

Now let us have a closer look at the individual parts

What can go wrong with the calipers / cylinders?

The seals can develop leaks. Seals can harden and leak.Pistons can seize

Excessive moisture in fluid can corrode bodies and pistons 

Slides can seize , broken dust boots can allow water to corrode sealing surfaces and hard contaminants to enter the sealing areas and cut the seals


What is special about Brake Fluid?

Brake fluid needs to have a very high boiling point.
Why is this so?
When the brake pads press on the brake rotors the friction creates high temperatures. This heat is transferred from the brake pads to the caliper pistons and from the pistons to the brake fluid. Brake fluids do absorb moisture from the air, when this happens the boiling temperature of the brake fluid is lowered. Liquids cannot be compressed but gas like air can. Should you have air in the braking system your brakes will not work properly.

If you have ever watched a kettle boil you will have noticed bubbles rising from the heating element. Air bubbles in the brake fluid compromise the safe operation of your brakes.

Different types of brake fluids have different boiling points, they cannot be mixed! Should the brake fluid reservoir level drop topping it up is not enough. The loss needs to be investigated. Brake fluid does not evaporate.The brake system needs to be inspected. You might have leak in the braking system which could be potentially dangerous.

What could happen to my car if I don't change the brake fluid?

By not changing the brake fluid in your car every two years you could be compromising the safety of your vehicle.
In today's vehicles, braking systems are hydraulic and rely on a polyglycol type fluid as the hydraulic medium. This performs a number of key functions in your braking system. No matter how good your brake fluid is when new, it will deteriorate over time. This is because brake fluids absorb moisture. The increased moisture content lowers the boiling point of the brake fluid. Have your brakes serviced by us on a regular basis to ensure the safety of you and your passengers and to avoid unnecessary, costly repairs

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

An anti-lock braking system (ABS) is a system on motor vehicles which prevents the wheels from locking while braking.
The purpose of this is to allow the driver to maintain steering control under heavy braking and, minimize braking distances (to compensate from the driver applying  the brake fully to reduce or loss of control).

Brake Lights

Should the brake light on your dashboard comes on you may have a serious drop in hydraulic pressure. Your brakes may be near total failure.

Drag

Sticking brakes, hot wheels or engine that seems to have lost power. Brakes may be failing to release; the condition can reverse itself, leaving you with no brakes at all.

Grabs

"Touchy" brakes that grab with the least pressure. May indicate a problem as simple as grease or oil contaminated lining - or as serious as a loose or broken components ready to fail in an emergency.

Hard Pedal

Requires extreme pressure to make brake function. It can indicate power brake trouble, restricted hydraulic lines, frozen callipers or wheel cylinders, or damaged brake linings.

Low Pedal

Pedal nearly touching the floorboard before brakes function. May activate your brake warning light. Problems may require a simple adjustment or indicate something much more serious.

Pull

Car pulls to one side when brakes are applied. May be an under inflated tire, incorrectly adjusted brakes or brakes are in need of repair. Brake fluid leak onto friction surfaces

Squeal

Brakes should operate with a minimal amount of noise. Some noise is normal but excessive squeal, screech, grinding, groaning, chatter, clatter or bang means your brakes need attention.

Vibration

Brake pedal, steering wheel or entire vehicle shakes, vibrates or pulsates when brake is applied. May indicate need to resurface disc brake rotors/drums - or signal a serious problem of a loose component or faulty steering/suspension mechanism
